Winning Photographers (2015 Calendar)
I have loved the outdoors since before I was old enough to remember. My mom used to tell me that when I was a baby, if I was fussy, all she had to do was let me see out the window and I would calm down. Growing up without TV at an Air Force base in Germany, I spent most of my free time wandering through the surrounding woods and playing in the streams.
Today, my wife, kids, dogs and I live in Albuquerque, NM, and we travel to Chaffee County frequently to visit friends and enjoy the mountains. I especially like the clear streams and rich mining history of Chaffee County. The whole family likes hiking, camping and exploring the high country.
CAROL CARTWRIGHT (November and Best of Show)
I have a background in education from the University of Iowa and Drake University. I have taken extensive photography classes from the Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP) and continue to participate in workshops throughout the USA. I capture the rhythmic nature of subjects by establishing a sensitive connection to them by using intuition and imagination. I like to share the magic with others who are captured by the essence of the subject, yet experience a sense of curiosity and wonder. My photographic images are for sale at The Maverick Potter, Salida, and www.cartwrightphotography.net.
KATHY CURTIN (February and September)
I have lived in Colorado for 35 years and feel blessed to be surrounded by the beauty and majestic mountains in our state. I reside in Lakewood, with my husband Chris, and have enjoyed spending weekends at our Buena Vista home for over 4 years. I have been an amateur photographer for over 15 years and recently have taken up watercolor and acrylic painting. My love for hiking provides many opportunities to photograph the numerous scenic vistas of Chaffee County.
KEN GRACZYK (January and December)
I have lived in the mountains for over 25 years. It is like living closer to heaven. There is an endless charm everywhere you look, with surprises and history around every corner. The mountains are an inspiration. We should all have dreams and work towards achieving them. After years of hard work and dedication, being retired is like being on a permanent vacation. How lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place with so many wonderful local dancers.
JEANETTE MELTON (May)
I grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania and along the gulf coast of Florida. Both areas awakened my appreciation for the lay of the land, the contrast of season and weather, plus the rhythm of nature. I discovered Buena Vista in 1992 with my husband, and we made a plan to one day live in this beautiful valley. That dream came true, and every day I give thanks for the images that appear before my eyes and my camera.
SHERRY THOMAS (April)
My parents instilled in me an appreciation of the beauty of nature. Carrying a camera with me to capture the sights that I was enjoying seemed important to me, even at an early age. Fortunately, I married a man who encouraged my interests. After retiring, we moved to Buena Vista. Following his death, I made the decision to stay. I find great joy and comfort from the surrounding mountains, the fantastic wildflowers, the beautiful bluebirds, as well as the colorful sun rises and sunsets. My photography continues to be a major focus of my life.
SHAWNEE VANNESS (August)
I am a busy 17 year old, and will be a senior at Buena Vista High School in the fall. I just love taking pictures, and this past year, I enjoyed my photography class in school. Metals and wood shop are my other favorite classes. I am in gymnastics and soccer, and also love camping, hiking, fishing and dirt biking.
JOHN VIDULICH (March)
I’ve been in love with taking pictures ever since I first picked up a camera.
Photography equipment has changed and improved a lot since then, yet I am still fascinated with taking a picture, capturing the perfect light, color balance, exposure, and subject matter to affect the perfect image. I’ve taken numerous courses, seminars and workshops to become familiar with the latest techniques and technologies, especially in regard to digital photography and finished processing options using Photoshop CS4 to add unique, and unusual affects to the final image.
CURT WELTY (July and October)
I have lived in Buena Vista since 1986. Cheryl (Cheri) and I have been married for 39 years. I attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL and the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL majoring in Business Administration. In the mid ‘60s, I spent four years in the USAF serving in the Strategic Air Command (SAC). After 31 years, I retired from Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, IL. My interest in photography goes back many years to when my dad gave me my first camera, a well-worn Kodak box camera.
